Last night I saw
The Age of Stupid
for the second time
and four hundred
local people
sat
and at the end asked
questions
of luminaries
on the stage
and no one cried
no one that I saw
no one said they
cried
or even felt sad
or scared
The articulate
articulated
and the others
sat silent
When I sat
and listened to the
luminaries answers
how with some
sacrifice
(not flying for four
years)
and personal expense
they’d cut their own
emissions
(better insulation
for their houses)
to two tons
(not going to London
by car)
but then
one ton is what is
needed
for us all
to survive
When I heard our MP
say he is worried
that even only two
degrees
of increase in
global temperatures
(a near impossible
task)
is not enough
will lead to
disaster
When I saw in the
film
a cartooned
explanation
of how humanity will
need to shrink
(the rich countries)
while developing
countries grow
their emissions
and then
in 2025
we will all equally
have our share
of global emissions
each population have
the same
emissions
and then
we will all
shrink
our emissions
till 2065
and only then
will we be ok
will we be on course
to survive
This film
these reactions
these words
this vision
raises grave doubts
serious
uncertainties
debilitating
sadnesses
crippling
powerlessness
But this morning
it is this vision
of 2065
of equal emissions
all through humanity
at sustainable
levels
it is this vision
I want to spread
to invest energy in
tell stories about
know it already
happened
that we can do this
without huge killing
without huge dying
without huge
catastrophes
we can do this
out of excitement
out of care
out of intelligence
we can do this
